Bronxville girls author quarterfinal win over Croton-Harmon

Sometimes a final score doesn’t indicate the true tenor of a game. Such was the case on Monday afternoon, when No. 2-seeded Bronxville hosted No. 7 Croton-Harmon in the Class B girls soccer quarterfinals. And while the hosts earned a shutout win over the Tigers, topping Croton 2-0, the disparity in shots and time-of-possession provided a little insight into just how dominant the Broncos can be.

Kalliroi Ladas scored both Bronxville goals—one in the first half and another in the second—but the Broncos were on the attack all game long, peppering Croton-Harmon keeper Natalie Barillaro with 17 shots on the day.

“I was very happy with the way we played today, the way we generated scoring cha

nces, but we have to make the most of those,” said Bronxville head coach Don Cupertino. “[Barillaro] played great, she made a ton of great saves, but we have to put the ball in the net.”

The reason for that, he added, is that it only takes one small play to change the outcome of a tight game.

Late in the second half, Bronxville nearly found that out the hard way as the Tigers were able to exert a little pressure and cause some havoc in front of the Broncos net in 1-0 ballgame. Though the hosts—led by a two-save effort from Lily Delaney—were able to turn away those chances and extend the lead down at the other end.

“I trust the girls in that spot, but in a close game, you don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Cupertino. “One bad bounce, a bad cross, all of a sudden its going to be a tie game.”

At 10-5-1, the Broncos are eyeing another deep postseason run, something that Cupertino believes is certainly a possibility given the strength of the team’s regular season schedule, which included a pair of games against Class A powerhouse Albertus Magnus.

“We played some tough teams, Magnus twice, Pleasantville, both of whom were undefeated,” said Cupertino. “I think that helps to get us ready for what is expected of us in the postseason and we definitely benefit from the competition.”

With the win, the Broncos head onto the Class B semifinals, where they will take on No. 3 seed Dobbs Ferry, which advanced with a quarterfinal round win over No. 6 Rye Neck.

Bronxville previously beat the Eagles 2-0 in the final game of the regular season. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 30.
