New Rochelle Forward (NR Forward), the city of New Rochelle’s staple local and minority-focused vocational training program led in partnership with Soulful Synergy, launched its 2025 workforce development programming at an open house and networking event this week. Designed to build the capacity of individuals to effectively compete for the opportunities created by the unprecedented development boom in
the city and beyond, NR Forward connects participants to certification courses, handson training, career readiness, case management and job placement services, as well as a network of local developers, contractors, and community leaders.
“As one of the fastest growing cities in New York State, we are committed to ensuring that our ongoing development translates into real opportunities for our residents. Through targeted training initiatives and strategic partnerships – as we are highlighting today with NR Forward and Soulful Synergy – we are preparing our community members for long-term career success, while ensuring our City has the skilled labor force needed to support continued progress,” said Mayor Yadira Ramos-Herbert.
The first open house event and networking event of the year was held at NR Forward, 173 Huguenot St. Suite 210 in downtown New Rochelle. The program featured a networking lunch, followed by a program introduction by the Mayor, the City Manager, and the Commissioner of Development, and program details by Soulful Synergy. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with developers and contractors about upcoming projects and hiring needs and concluded with facilitated networking. Training for the first cohort of this year will begin on April 14
and run for six weeks.
“This workforce training program is part of our 2025 Work Plan, and it is a vital part of our broader efforts to elevate the quality of
life in our community. By expanding access to stable, well-paying jobs, we are not only empowering workers but also supporting local businesses and fostering a more vibrant and resilient City,” said City Manager Wilfredo Melendez.
Trainings and certifications are provided by Soulful Synergy, a workforce development agency dedicated to creating equitable and sustainable communities. The NR Forward construction training cohorts are six weeks long and will be held in the spring and summer.
“As a lifelong New Rochelle resident, I’m thrilled about the New Rochelle Forward Program,” said Alejandro Alvarez, Co-Founder of Soulful Synergy. “This partnership between Soulful Synergy and the City marks a significant step towards enhancing our workforce and community vitality. We’re excited to demonstrate the opportunities this collaboration has created.”
“Workforce development remains a top priority for our City, and the New Rochelle Forward program in partnership with Soulful Synergy plays a key role in connecting residents with local and regional construction jobs,” said Development Commissioner Adam Salgado. ”With several major projects underway and more on the horizon, we are focused on building a strong foundation for sustainable growth that benefits the entire community,”
NR Forward provides a diverse range of courses and certifications tailored to the needs of the industry. An important goal for New Rochelle this year is to expand the offerings to prepare participants for green jobs with trainings in EV charging, alternative energy, and green infrastructure. Participants can also benefit from career readiness services, customized one-on-one and group sessions for employment preparation, and priority enrollment in the Clean Energy Academy for advanced education.
To be eligible for enrollment, participants must be New Rochelle residents aged 18 or older, with an interest in the construction
and clean energy/sustainability industries.
